Embracing Laughter: The Heart of My Message This May

Guess who's back on the blog this month? Yep, it's me! April's weather is like a moody teenager—totally unpredictable. If you're chilling on the East Coast or hanging out in the Mid-Atlantic, you know we got slapped with a spring that felt more like a winter sequel. But fear not, because May is here, the month that promises to hit the reset button and sprinkle some sunshine and warmth our way. I'm ready for the sun to take over, because nothing beats that warm weather happiness!

This is the time to get outside, soak up the sun and get your fair share of Vitamin D. Springtime really brings out the best of everyone. I am in the best of moods. I want to be outside and connect.

Why Laughter Matters During Divorce

Divorce triggers a complex mix of emotions. Grief, anger, fear, and sadness can weigh heavily on your mental and physical health. Laughter, however, acts as a natural antidote to stress. When you laugh, your body releases endorphins, the feel-good chemicals that improve mood and reduce pain. It also lowers cortisol, the stress hormone, helping your body relax.

In May, as nature bursts into life, laughter can symbolize your own personal rebirth. It reminds you that even after loss, happiness is possible. Laughter doesn’t erase the pain, but it offers a break from it, a moment to breathe and reconnect with yourself.

Besides feeling excited and happy about springtime, watching comedy is one of my favorite activities. I love a good RomCom (romantic comedy) movie. I enjoy being with people who I can share a laugh with. Every month, I either go to a live comedy show or watch a stand-up performance online or on TV, sometimes doing all of these. Embracing laughter can be an essential part of healing and finding joy again. I have certainly embraced this method of healing for myself.

I've found various methods and reasons to prioritize laughter, and I'd like to share them.

How to Bring More Laughter Into Your Life

Finding laughter during divorce might feel challenging, but small steps can make a big difference. Here are practical ways to invite more joy and humor into your daily routine:

  • Watch Comedies or Funny Shows

Choose movies or TV shows that make you laugh. Comedy can provide a temporary escape and lighten your mood.

  • Spend Time with Playful People

Surround yourself with friends or family members who have a good sense of humor. Their laughter can be contagious.

  • Try Laughter Yoga or Group Sessions

Laughter yoga combines breathing exercises with intentional laughter. It’s a unique way to boost your mood and connect with others.

  • Recall Funny Memories

Reflect on moments that made you laugh in the past. Sharing these stories with someone you trust can bring warmth and connection.

  • Engage in Playful Activities

Activities like dancing, playing games, or even silly hobbies can spark spontaneous laughter.

The Science Behind Laughter and Healing

Research supports the idea that laughter has healing properties. Studies show that laughter can:

  • Improve immune function

  • Reduce pain perception

  • Lower blood pressure

  • Enhance social bonding

For example, a 2016 study published in Psychological Science found that people who laughed together felt more connected and experienced less stress. This is especially important during divorce, when social support is crucial.

Laughter as a Bridge to New Connections

Divorce often disrupts social circles, leaving people feeling lonely. Laughter can help rebuild connections by breaking down barriers and fostering openness. Sharing a laugh creates a sense of belonging and trust, which can be the foundation for new friendships or even romantic relationships.

Consider joining community groups or classes in May, when many outdoor activities and social events begin. These settings provide natural opportunities to meet others and share joyful moments.

Personal Stories of Laughter Through Divorce

Many people who have gone through divorce report that humor helped them cope. One woman shared how attending a local improv comedy class gave her a new perspective. The experience not only made her laugh but also helped her regain confidence and meet supportive friends.

Another man found relief by watching stand-up comedy specials every evening. The laughter helped him unwind and reminded him that life still held moments of joy.

Tips for Cultivating a Positive Mindset with Laughter

  • Be Patient With Yourself

Healing takes time. Allow yourself to feel all emotions, including sadness, but make space for laughter too.

  • Practice Gratitude

Focus on small things that bring you joy each day. Gratitude and laughter often go hand in hand.

  • Avoid Negative Humor

Steer clear of sarcasm or jokes that put others down. Positive humor uplifts and heals.

  • Create a Laughter Ritual

Dedicate a few minutes daily to something that makes you smile or laugh.

May’s longer days encourage growth and new beginnings. Use this time to nurture your emotional well-being. Let laughter be part of your self-care routine as you move forward from divorce.

Whether it’s a walk in a blooming park, a funny podcast, or a lighthearted conversation, these moments can help you reconnect with joy and hope.

The one that piqued my interest is the laughter yoga. I've never heard of it, but be rest assured I'm going to find it. Peace and Love! 💜
